Today we are pleased to bring you another sample HSK test for students preparing to take the HSK for the first time. These fifteen fill-in-the-blanks questions address the same vocabulary and grammar points found on the real exam. So take this mock test and see how you do. Just remember to watch the clock. In a real exam situation, you would have only twelve minutes to answer these questions.

A question about #8:他這個人嚴肅是嚴肅,但是心腸很好。What does 嚴肅是嚴肅 mean? I don't recognize this pattern.

@murrayjames I think it means something like "You could call him serious, but he has a good heart". (Literally: "As far as serious is concerned, he could be called serious, but...")

@huyilin,Thanks, that makes sense. I'm interested in the grammatical pattern [person][adjective]是[adjective], which I hadn't seen before. Are these sentences also ok?小王调皮是调皮,但是...表哥羞涩是羞涩,甚至...Does the pattern work for objects and places, as well as people? Also, is it significant that the sentence focuses attention on the subject (他這個人) instead of 他嚴肅是嚴肅?

@murrayjamesI think both your example sentences are correct, and it should make no difference in meaning whether you use 他這個人 or just 他 except for a flavouring of singling out that person. This structure also works for objects or places as in 工作忙是忙, 可是大家很愉快。(Example curtesy of 規範詞典)There is a similar structure with [verb] 歸 [verb] to express "in spite of": 批評歸批評, 他就是不改。

@murrayjames,Exactly like huyilin said. Just one more thing to be careful when you use this pattern: this pattern is used to express concession, so the second clause is usually a turning sentence, which means you can always put a "但是" in between these two clauses.--Echoecho@popupchinese.com
