Two days west from Guilin and the riders were all but lost. Despite the effectiveness of China's Imperial road network, which strung together the major cities of the empire and helped ensure the political fealty of the far-flung provinces, nationwide travel was still dangerous. And the maps from the Imperial College in Beijing were nearly worthless too, showing only the general lay of the land and occasional geographic landmark. To find a small town in this maze-like mountainous region the two riders would have to ask for directions town by town....

Learning Chinese? Let us just admit it: the title for today's lesson is a bit tongue in cheek. Because it isn't about asking for directions in anything but the loosest possible sense, and instead focuses on how to communicate an attitude of condescension in mandarin. So listen up and in a short ten minutes we'll arm you with knowledge of how to quietly infuriate speaking partners. And if you have thoughts or feedback, send us an email at service@popupchinese.com anytime.

你们真的喜欢僵尸。。。哈哈:)。

在中国,如果我听不懂一个人,我应不应该expect他们下次大说?在美国我常常看这样的情况。外国人来美国,但是他们的英语不是很好。这个外国人可能迷路了所以问美国人‘X怎么走’。那位美国人快地回复怎么走。太快了。外国人听不懂。下次他们大说来替代慢说。

On that note...Is there a way to say 'Instead of X they do Y?' 我的朋友说中国人不会说这样的话。另外的朋友给我那个“来替代”的想法。

@craigrut,

哈哈,有的人可能会“大声说”,而不是“说得慢一点儿”。

Instead of X they do Y,你可以说“是X,不是Y”,或者“X,而不是Y”. It depends on the context.

Echo, twice in the show (around 8:05 and 8:50) you mention a government person 拿ing someone in a village. Can't quite make it out, what is this word?

@zjv5002,

Echo was talking about a 大喇叭,da4 la3 ba, basically a loudspeaker. The whole is in short, at 8:05 they talked about how the Premiere (总理) along with his enourage (随从) went to a village(农村)and his worker (拿着一个大喇叭) carrying a big loudspeaker announced, the Premiere has come to visit everyone(总理来看望大家). At 8:50 they talked about how, a year after the Si Chuan earthquake (四川大地震 Si Chuan Di4 Zhen4) the Premiere returned with his sui2 cong2 随从 to see how the local's lives were going and, 拿着一个大喇叭 said to the people, 我惦记你们呀! (wo3 dian4 ji4 ni3 men ya!).

Remember that 喇叭 can be a loudspeaker or a horn, here it's a loudspeaker shaped like a horn, something like a megaphone.

@Echo,

我觉得《古墓村》这个名字编得很好。我一听就有很好奇很想随着我的随从而自己去古墓村冒险,本身逛逛古墓村,亲眼看看有没有僵尸或鬼在那里作祟。

很好玩啊!

@Echo,

还好吧。其实我早就学会了这个单词。我很久以前喜欢为了轻松地学会单词会往往的研究歌词。我曾经迷恋了《神奇》孙燕的歌曲。你想啊,那是好几年以前学会的单词而我现在才可以说说一次的作祟。还好老师夸我用得很好。谢谢老师!

我不会自满哦!

Should measure word 场 be tone 2 or tone 3? Seems to be tone 2 in dialog, and according to dictionary is the measure word for events and happenings: spell, episode, bout ...

@etbaccata,

It's third tone. Hmm... weird, when I looked at our dialogue page, it is the third tone, not second.
